Widows Benefits
Disabled Widows or Widowers may receive disability benefits from the Social Security Administration (SSA). In fact, these benefits do not require that the disabled person have worked and paid Social Security taxes. The benefits are based upon the Social Security earnings record of the late spouse, meaning the late spouse needed to have worked and paid Social Security taxes. To qualify, the disabled widow or widower must be at least 50 years old. There are also other requirements regarding the proximity of time between the death of the late spouse, and the time when the disability of the surviving spouse began.
Like Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), these benefits may pay Retro-Actively up to one year prior to date of application.
As for health insurance, like SSD recipients, Disabled Widows/Widowers may also qualify for Medicare.
